Founded in 2019 by Erasmus Brosdau, Black Amber Digital was created with the goal to push real-time rendered graphics to cinema level quality.

Additionally, Black Amber Digital was designed to become a place where artists can work from every place in the world, decentralized, with flat hierarchies and driven by passion.

With the headquarter in Offenbach am Main, Germany, the entire team works completely remotely from all parts of the world. Together with our subsidary Black Amber Digital Japan and our parter studio SAFEHOUSE in Tokyo, Japan, we constantly push the boundary to create outstanding visuals.

OPEN POSITIONS

Job description

Black Amber Digital GmbH is looking for an experienced Lead Cinematic Artist to work on an unannounced CG animation series rendered in real-time. The ideal candidate understands all phases from block-out to final rendering using Unreal Engine 4/5. As the current project is an animated series, scene optimizations are necessary, but highest quality is prioritised over framerate costs. 

Responsibilities

  • Leading a team of cinematic artists and providing feedback both in technical and creative areas.
  • Creating and developing concepts/ideas for scripts and working with and without storyboards.
  • Maintaining an unified cinematic language throughout projects.
  • Working in Unreal Engine to build organised cinematic sequences.
  • Collaborate closely with Artists and the Director.
  • Developing cinematics from start to finish, including set dressing, lighting and camera animation.
  • Editing and colour grading complete cinematics, including trailers, episodes, shows, etc.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of game engine workflows using Unreal Engine.
  • Experience of leading and teaching artists.
  • Previous experience creating high-quality cinematics for AAA games.
  • Strong understanding of cameras, lenses, composition and scene layout.
  • Strong knowledge of Unreal Engine’s lighting tools.
  • Strong experience of cinematic beats and editing. 
  • Experience in modifying environments for shot based layouts.
  • An understanding of light and colour theory and a strong passion for beautiful images.
  • Experience applying and tweaking shaders.
  • A keen eye for colour grading.
  • Passion for pushing the state of the art in real-time visual quality
  • High degree of self-motivation and initiative
  • Fluent in English, both verbally and written.
  • Must be comfortable to be working in a complete remote office.

Job description

Black Amber Digital GmbH is looking for an experienced Character Artist to work on the main character of an unannounced AAA game using Unreal Engine. The ideal candidate shows a strong understanding of high quality asset creation and outstanding texturing. You will be involved in the character creation process from start to finish, being responsible for sculpting, modelling, texturing and setting up characters in the engine. You will be working closely together with Technical Artists and Animators to push the visual and technical quality to the next level.

Responsibilities

  • Development of high-quality AAA characters and character related 3D assets in a realistic and stylized art style.
  • Balance quality and efficiency of work to gain the best possible results within the given time frame and technical constraints.
  • Ability to skillfully optimise characters to game-ready quality.
  • Ensure performance and technical quality of 3D character assets.
  • Collaborate closely with Artists and the Director.
  • Integration of character assets into the game engine and verifying visual quality.
  • Tweaking and adjusting shaders by developing own materials and/or using Black Amber’s inhouse character shaders.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of game engine workflows using Unreal Engine.
  • Experience of crafting realistic clothes and outfits using Marvellous Designer.
  • Previous experience creating high-quality characters for AAA games.
  • Strong understanding of anatomy and silhouettes.
  • Strong knowledge of Unreal Engine’s material and shading workflows.
  • Knowledge of Painter, Zbrush, Maya (or other DCC) and Photoshop.
